What a wonderful Father's Day

Malcolm's Dad

Malcolm gave me the most wonderful father's day present the other day. He was lying on the couch in the pillow. I laid down next to him and starting giving him a belly rub. He looked up and licked my nose. A kiss!!!! I've had Malcolm for almost 2 1/2 years and this is the first time he ever gave me a kiss. And he's done it a few more times since. My little beast is turning into a lovable dog. A kiss might not sound like much, but Malcolm has always been more of a junkyard dog than he has been a sweetie pie. He is too busy and rambunctious to stop for mushy stuff like hugs and kisses. There are times when he will cuddle in my lap, providing there are no squirrels in the yard to chase or rope toys to destroy. I am his last choice to spend his time with. So now he is saying "I love you too dad". I am so thrilled, what a wonderful gift for father's day.

I want to reply to a lot of posts but my old pc freezes a lot when I try to post things on the web so I'm going to put a few responses in one post. I'm afraid if I try to reply to another topic the pc will freeze up. Since its working tonight here goes...

Pindrop and Oldfox now have a rebellious teenager. Layla is trying to assert her authority. She is getting nippy which is her way of saying "Don't you get it? I am the boss". I didn't believe it until I joined this forum but these dogs do actually try to bully and intimidate people. Don't let Layla get away with this. Its time for boot camp. Pindrop and Oldfox have just become drill sergeants and they can't let Layla get out of line. Whatever training method works for you use it and don't let up even once. When I got Malcolm he was too combative for any training technique to work. I tried many things with no success and ended up locking him in the hall until he decided to be nice. And it took him quite a while to decide to be nice, he is such a stubborn dog. But now, after YEARS (he is so stubborn) he is getting affectionate. So clamp down on that little girl and let her know that bullying will not work. Like PKCrossley says, she will get over it and turn her attention and energy to other things that you and her can enjoy.

I love the posts by Lynn. A young puppy and kids. What a perfect combination. My pc won't play the videos so I really like reading the replies that describe the videos. Its like the old days of listening to a radio and picturing the scene in your mind. I can see the kids wearing out before the dog does. (btw, Cairns never wear out).

Brad has a great description of zoomies, an impromptu Gran Prix, yes indeed. Malcolm will zip back and forth through the house like a little racecar. Sometimes all you can see is a little gray flash with a smile going by.

Happy Birthday Tanner and Kirby.

Welcome Titan. You got yourself some humans, good work.

So Divot discovered toilet paper lol. I had to take mine off the holder and put it up high for a while. Now Malcolm is ok, rope toys are much more fun to shred.

And finally I hope Dempsy got a pool. I put the sprinkler out. Malcolm has so much fun running in the water trying to bite and chase the streams. Plus the lawn gets watered at the same time.

Happy Father's Day to all the Cairn daddies.

Happy Father's Day to you too. I'm so glad to hear that Malcolm (btw..that is my brother's name) is finally becoming a lover and not indifferent to hug and kisses. Thank you for your reply to Layla's snapping. We do seem to have it under control as we took command of the situation and have let her know that this is not a behavior that is tolerated in this house. I know you are right in nipping this in the bud and it seems to have worked. When I first joined this forum, I was under the impression that Cairns are very independent and at first Layla was no different, but over time, we have noticed that although she doesn't particularly like to be touched, there are times that just as long as she is laying beside you and touching you with some part of her body, she is a happy camper. There are also times she wants to be in our laps, especially if we are sitting in our rocking chairs outside on the farmer's porch as this allows her a higher view to see the lawn and the pesky squirrels or chipmunks scampering across the rock walls.

I'm sorry to hear about your computer and sure hope you can get it replaced in order to see all the great videos that are being posted with all the new puppies that have come on board.

great post! they do become cuddly, usually after the age of three or four, and eventually they become very soulful, real companions in a special way. but first you have to go through the rest of it. you and malcolm have clearly bonded through your trials. i think is probably the secret reason people say that having had a cairn they will never have a different breed --these dogs make growing up a mutual experience, you have to learn and grow as much as they do, and eventually you bond in the way that guys in the foxhole do. you and malcolm have a wonderful life ahead.

Happy Fathers Day! I love your post. Sorry that you can't watch the video's, I hope that you can get that problem resolved.

We have to be careful when Kelly is giving us a kiss, she can feel our excitement when she does it and nips follow soon.HA!HA!

We just love our little darling. It is amazing the bond that forms with these little cuties, she has only been with us 5 days

but I feel like she has been with us for a lifetime.

I am happy to hear Malcolm is showing his affection for you, in a loving way for a change. Have a great day!

That was my first thought too - Very fun post! Malcolms little tuff boy attitude had a crack in it. :P and through that crack slipped out a little tongue. That is the best dad's day gift - good for you!

Demps did get his new pool and he is using it regularly. Mom is going to mow today again ....

I know how frustrating that is to have a computer that freezes - mine does that too every now and then and I am way to cheap to bite the bullet for a new computer. (I have to save for swimming pools, squeakies, treats, beds, collars, vet visits and gas for gator rides, etc. - you know the necessities) But now we know that you are with us and thinking of us ... and you had a wonderful Fathers Day with Malcolm! :D

Very sweet story. Yes, they're rough and tough on the outside but they seem to mellow and become more affectionate as the years go by. I'll bet you're on top of the world - that's what a Cairn kiss does to you!

I know just how you feel about Malcom's first kiss. My Gavin does not show affection at all. He's licked my hand twice, but only because I had been eating a messy sandwich. He's never made an attempt to kiss my face. But, this weekend, he asked to get up on my lap for the very first time! I was thrilled. Thing is, he didn't know what to do once he got up there!

Lucky for me, Zekey is a total love-bug and frequently shows lots of affection. Maybe Gavin will eventually learn.

Hey I Got A Home! Boy, was I glad to hear you describe Malcomb -"Junk Yard Dog" Kirby is the same way, he may or may not sit with you, he does not want to sleep on the bed with me (even when Dad won't catch us), he does not want to cuddle, and he is not the lovable little friendly guy with strangers everyone else writes about and makes me jealous! But, he will come find me when I'm not in the room. And those rare kisses are just magical! I have been traveling for 10 days, got home last night. I hid in the kitchen when DH brought him in. He immediately started checking rooms (DH said he had been doing that the entire time I was gone). I called him and he flew in like his tail was tied to a rocket! Jumping, licking, circles and lots of happy pee! Truthfully, I was thrilled beyond words - might could have forgone the happy pee though! Happy Fathers day to all you guys!
