kjwarnold Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Cicadas, glorious cicadas! If there's one laying around, it's a tasty snack for Packy. Luckily we don't have too many at our house, but in town they're thick. He'd have a field day there! And apparently the residents of my fair state, Missouri, like the idea of eating them, too! Idaho Cairns Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Wow, the "Show Me" state has become the "Barf Me Out" state!
tomatosandwich Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Oh no! Watch out for that! My lab had too many cicadas in the summer of 2003 in VA. They were so thick, he'd grab a branch with his mouth, shake all the cicadas to the ground, and eat them by the mouthful. He ended up very, very ill from it. He got severe diarrhea and he started dragging his back legs. The vet told us that many dogs get very sick from eating them. It took our lab a good 10 days to recover. It was so hard to keep him from them, though, because they were everywhere!
beccadiane374 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Well, this Missouri girl is not going to be eating cicada ice cream, that's for sure! Thanks for the info, tomatosandwich. Because of both the heat and the cicadas, we get up at 6:30 for a morning walk, because the weather is perfect & the cicadas are still sleeping. He still manages to snap up 2 or 3 of them, but they are everywhere, so I guess, compared to how many there are, 2 or 3 isn't a lot, however, your story will make me pay even more attention than before, so thank you. I've heard (probably on this forum!) that cat food is not healthy for dogs because it has such a higher protein level. Cicadas are supposed to be very high in protein, so I wonder if that's part of what caused the tummy troubles. Becky & Tanner
Tracy A. Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 OMG you poor things. We had our 17 or what ever it is year Cicadas in 2004- OMG it was unreal. Millions.... Millions... Tracy, Amos, Walter, Brattwrust & Mettwurst a.k.a The Gremlins
hheldorfer Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 OMG you poor things. We had our 17 or what ever it is year Cicadas in 2004- OMG it was unreal. Millions.... Millions... Ditto - I remember it well. They weren't terrible in our immediate neighborhood but some spots were completely infested. I remember DH and I driving north on the Chicago expressways and, even with the windows up and AC on, the noise from them was deafening.
kjwarnold Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 No cicado snacking this morning. For our usual morning coffee time on the porch, I brought out marrow bones. No one was the least bit interested in snacking on cicadas today! Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney
Lynn in TN Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I think I'll pass too! Just doesn't sound appealing to me. Sorry! I believe I'll stick to my Appalachian Food, dandelion greens, and such.
pindrop Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I have no idea what this is so once I've made this post, I'll go on the internet and look it up. Ignorance is bliss they say - so that must mean I'm a happy camper. Oldfox says we don't have them in Maine. Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
