Sam I Am Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I always wonder at the size of Jock's bladder and the capacity to hold huge amounts of pee! We always go for a good 30 minute walk each morning. Every bush, rock, tree, fence has to have a message left. We start off with usually a good long pee, as the walk progresses the amounts grow smaller, however, I have never noticed that he "runs dry"! Its amazing. Our female Scottie obviously was not very chatty as she did a few good pees and that was that. Are all male dogs programmed to leave so many more messages than their female counterparts? Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. - Anatole France Adventures with Sam &Rosie
kjwarnold Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Ours seem to have a high capacity for leaving lots of pee-mail. I think they're just better at distributing it. Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney
eastofeden Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 My girl is way worse about marking on casual walks then my male....... Raise your expectations for what your Cairn can do....and try very hard to meet your Cairn's expectations of you.
janis Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Neutered Kirby at 5 months. He pees "like a little girl" and doesn't hike, no marking. However, he stops at all "mailboxes" to read the mail!
Dempsy's Mom Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I know, Dempsy is a dribbler and he still has enough to make his mark. I think it's an ego thing. They have a need to make sure their the last mark. Little controllers. Elsie, Max, Meeko & Lori
Hawkeye Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Bailey & Radar are my first males and yes they seem to have a lot of pee-mail compared to our females. As Bailey matured it seemed he got worse. Radar is not at bad yet, but if he follows Bailey's development it will get worse as he approaches 2 or 3 yrs.
Dayvo Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Robby is just like Jock, all trees, posts, bushes, high grass get a squirt . If he could get the ducks in the park to stand still for it I think he'd mark them too.
Hagar Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 In sub-zero or rainy weather, Renny goes as long as 26-27 hours without peeing. When he does finally go, it's like a fire truck and I wonder if he will ever completely empty. As an older man, I envy his ability to hold his pee for what seems like forever. Especially during sub-zero weather, I will take him out frequently and he will try to go, but can't. He will finally "go" when it becomes urgent to him. He was neutered at 5 months and will be 6 years old July 19th. He will raise his leg sometimes but usually has this funny combination of squat like a girl and hike the leg anyway. When he has to go, he will squat and raise his left rear leg. As he pees, he gradually stands up and when he is back to standing, he's finished. It's the darndest thing to watch.
hheldorfer Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 Ziggy is an avid p-mail poster - whenever he gets a p-mail message he responds immediately. Buffy is much more selective regarding who receives a p-mail response and who doesn't. I guess it has to be a really important message before it gets her attention.
beccadiane374 Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Tanner is like Buffy...he always "reads" it, but picks & chooses which messages are worth responding to. UNLESS he actually sees another dog mark; then he always has to mark as well, no questions asked. Once he & another dog went back & forth a couple times before I finally dragged him away. Rohnda Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 You know, I once had to do a college paper (decades ago-- the last century in fact) anyway I had to relate our evolution through time and how we've evolved. At the risk of making the males on the site angry my research showed how "evolved" women had become but a clear example and how far behind the male species was is seen on any road trip I've ever taken. I have lost count of the many men I see who have pulled their vehicle over to the side of the road so they could "mark" their territory. Back to Luigi (my male cairn) I'm sure our morning walk would be cut short if we didn't have to stop for so many bushes. He sometimes lifts that leg of his so high I think he's going to do a headstand.
Jeff N Oscar Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I try to keep my dogs from marking.... We walk in the street mostly. It's a townhouse community so we are safe. I hate when my dog marks on someone's "stuff", even their grass. I think it's gross and I imagine all the little toddlers that have to deal with all that pee. OMG if they have to poo on someone's property, yuck... Don't care how well we scoop there is always something left "behind" This could all stem from not owning a dog till later in life, and dealing with all the neighborS letting their dog use my yard and trees. I always felt they should use their own yard and avoid mine, mind you we live on a cul-de-sac with a bunch of woods/trees around which they could use. At one point, after an argument with a women who told me she can let her dog go anywhere as long as she cleans it up, and I informed her that she can't use my yard if I don't want her to, I wondered how she would feel if I let my son go up to her house and do his "marking" in her yard. I am sure he could wipe up afterwards... just my thoughts, please don't kick me out of the community I became a dog person AFTER I got my dog.
Hawkeye Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 We also try to stop them from marking by letting them go before we leave the yard and then again when we get back. While walking we have started pulling them in close to us and this helps keeping them off the lawns plus makes for a nicer walk. If Bailey had his way, he would raise a leg to every tree, bush and blade of grass. I agree with Jeff N Oscar!!

I am sure he could wipe up afterwards... just my thoughts, please don't kick me out of the community I'll agree with you 100%! I haven't had a dog in since I left home, but we always cleaned up after them even in our own yard, and I'll do the same when my little princess comes home. People should not have to deal with other dogs and cats droppings. I live in a mobile home park and everyones animals uses my yard and chews up my stuff. I love animals but when you have 10 to 15 cats in your yard and 5 dogs that are not your own it can be very annoying! I'm the one that has to clean it up also, and replace the stuff they destroy. The marking can kill a tree if their are enough in the neighbor hood. If one dog marks a tree then everyones dog that passes will mark it also. Cat pee is even worse for killing bushes and trees, I have lost 3 bushes because of cats. I'm not trying to be mean just honest. I haven't seen not 1 person in our park clean up after their animals, and it can make you cranky when there are so many.
bradl Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I will let our dogs mark on trees and whatnot, but won't let them mark personal property like car tires or houses or flowers or even ornamental type shrubs. I feel there has to be a middle ground somewhere along the continuum of treating the world as a giant toilet versus pretending Nature is, can be, or should be "sanitized for my protection." Now if only the birds would have mercy on my house, my car, and my head! CAIRNTALK: Questions? Sam I Am Posted June 1, 2011 Author Posted June 1, 2011 Jock did the ultimate p mail one day while I was walking him in the off leash area.... I was paying to much attention to a friends dog, when I looked down he was lifting his leg on my jeans I think he was getting the message across that this lady belongs to me... is that true love Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened. - Anatole France Adventures with Sam &Rosie
Lynn in TN Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I just wanted to add that what I was talking about is in our yard really close to our home, not along the edge of our yard. I'm talking about in front of our steps, under our porch, in our veg. garden, and flower beds that are against our home not any where near the road. It is so bad some days we can smell the dog and cat poo and pee inside our home. The bird thing was funny Brad. I truly don't think my yard should be sanitary. I just think some dog and cat owners should respect others property, they let them lift their leg on my home, poo any where they want to in my yard and don't pick it up. but it bothers me most when they let them use my vegetable garden as their toilet.
josie&holly Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Holly stops to read pmail all the time on walks - I think she thinks it is the purpose of going for a walk! When we go to local country park with my friend's Irish Terrier bitch the two girls have weeing/marking competitions! If one goes, the other has to go and the do this constantly yet when I walk Holly on her own she does few stops for a wee! I am sure that their bladders cannot be big enough for the number of times they try to outdo each other in the same spot..... www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk

It's the darndest thing to watch. That's our Bailey's modus operandi exactly!! Always squatting & lifting the left real leg, never the right one. The funny thing is that when he wants to mark something he will always turn so he can lift his right rear leg to leave his mark! A "left leg pee-er", but a "right leg marker". How funny these guys are!! Jim Jim, Connie, Bailey & Sophie
Jeff N Oscar Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I agree the yard isn't meant to be spic & span, heck I argue that the house doesn't need to be spic & span speaking of birds.. people behind us have feeders set up which attracts more birds, bringing more droppings, which Jeff loves to roll in. I haven't asked them to stop putting the feeders out, but if it got out of control I would. NOW that you mention killing tress, I do have a tree in my front yard that is looking pretty bad, and it is a popular place for the neighborhood dogs to pee.. it's near the edge of our yard and very desirable for the passing dogs. It didn't occur to me it could be from the dogs... hmmmm I became a dog person AFTER I got my dog.

After Ziggy (our male dog) pees on a tree Buffy (female) will try to lift her leg and re-mark the spot. Poor girl, she doesn't realize that she isn't equipped with the proper anatomy.
