KShep Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Ripley has taken Interceptor and Comfortis from the time she has been mine. I like the Interceptor, but the Comfortis is too expensive. My vet's office recommended Trifexis today which is 2 in 1-both flea and heartworm prevention. I love the convenience of one the tablet, and if I go this route, I will be spending approximately $18 on parasite prevention a month ( purchasing a 6 month supply from petmeds.com). This sounds reasonable to me, but I just want to make sure that I am not spending more than I need too. Mosquitos, Fleas, even the occasional tick are plentiful where I live- so I think a decent medication is a must. I just don't know which ones are the best and have been relying solely on my vets advice (Which I don't think is a bad thing. I'm just trying to make an informed decision).
beccadiane374 Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 I use K-9 Advantix & Heartgard and spend approximately $20 a month. During colder months, I use less expensive flea/tick medicine. Becky & Tanner
pindrop Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 We use Heartgard Plus & Frontline - just purchased 12 Heartgard Plus @ $67.00 and 6 Frontline @ $49 We purchased our items from Foster & Smith with no shipping charges. I'm not sure if that is considered reasonable or not but have used these same products for all animals for years and although we have tried to replace them with cheaper products have never been happy with any other products as we have found they don't repel ticks to the extent Frontline Plus has done. Living in Maine, the tick population is rampant and Lyme is currently the second largest disease here both in animals and humans. Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
kjwarnold Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Frontline Plus 3 pack: $35 Interceptor Heartworm 3 pack: $31 --- Total $66 Monthly cost per dog: $22 x 2 dogs ---- $44 Oh, crum! Why did I have to figure this out and see how much it's costing me? Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney

Jeff N Oscar Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Heartguard blue heartworm chewables $40 for 12 pack... Frontline plus flea & tick skin applicators $73 for 6+2 free... grabbing calculator.... $3.33 a month for heartworm $9.13 a month for flea & tick $12.46 a month per dog.. hmmmm not too bad and I buy it from the vet's office. I became a dog person AFTER I got my dog.
janis Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Our vet has started charging $25 for a prescription to Pet med or any of those on line places for the heartworm med so it's cheaper to get it from him. Paying about the same as everyone else. He'll give you a coupon to get $10 back from the company.
Nena Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I get heartgart plus from vet comes to about $4.00 a month. But our breeder gave me this tip in flea protection, since she has so many dogs to take care of. She told me to buy the protection for the largest dog size (4 oz) and get four dosages out of it. I use a syringe without the needle and place a small amount of the K9 advantrix in a container and suck up with syringe just the amount that measures to 1 oz. I keep adding small amounts until I have 1 oz. I buy the 6 months to save money. instead of one month you get four months. If you want to pour all of it out to store in different container that is easier to dispense, only store in glass container. I tried plastic but melted the hard plastic container I used so that did not work. It does require extra effort but saves so much money. cairn terriers leave pawprints on our lives
eastofeden Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 I use Revolution by Pfizer and pay $80 for a 7 month's worth of doses. So it breaks down to approximately $11.00 a month. Revolution includes both flea & heartworm as well as controlling a few other parasites. I switched to it when Frontline Plus stopped working for me. Since I live in a meditterainain climate, we have fleas year round. Have not had problems since....the key is to ensure that EVERY animal in the house (canine and feline is on flea control) Raise your expectations for what your Cairn can do....and try very hard to meet your Cairn's expectations of you.
KerryJayne Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 We are so lucky here I thought it was bad enough buying frontline every 2 mths and wormers every 3 mths ! From Kerry, Molly the Westie, Peppa the black Lab, and Nessie the Cairn xx
