CTA Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I'm concerned I may have ruined my cairns coat. He's 11 months old, and I took him to the roomers today for a trim. When I picked him up, they have shaved him down to a half inch or a little less everywhere except his face. My wife is appalled (I actually think he looks pretty nice...), and I'm wondering if his outer coat will come back OK or if I need to do anything? This is my first post here...thanks for any replies.
2littleterrors Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 happened to my girl when she was a little over a year old. It will eventually grow out to where you can get it stripped. The only thing better than owning a Cairn is owning two!
CTA Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 Thank you....I just want him to look like he did previously.
Idaho Cairns Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 That is really and unusual colored coat--really pretty. His hair will grow back, no problem but it might be a bit softer than before. The best thing? You still have the same dog, with or without hair!
KerryJayne Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Wow he's a stunning colour :-) From Kerry, Molly the Westie, Peppa the black Lab, and Nessie the Cairn xx
hheldorfer Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 We had the same experience after we adopted Buffy. Let the coat grow out and start stripping it, and it should eventually grow back as a coarse Cairn coat. He's beautiful, by the way!
jo_ Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I can understand why you're disappointed...but either way you have one adorable little guy there! Jo, Jagger & Eddie
CTA Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 Thank you...looks like I'll hand strip when his hair returns, and we'll see what happens!
beccadiane374 Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Either way, he's a cutie for sure! The same thing happened to me. Tanner is my first cairn & I asked the groomer about stripping & she told me that wasn't done anymore. Assuming she knew what she was talking about, I went ahead and took him & she shaved him. He was still cute (of course!) but just not the same. He was about 10 months when this happened. He will be 3 years next month. His hair was all really soft for a long time, but I've been having him stripped & he's pretty much gotten back to the harsher coat he's supposed to have. Becky & Tanner
kjwarnold Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Yep, it will grow out and you can get that nice harsh coat back with some stripping later on. Beatiful coloring! Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney
CTA Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 3 years?! Oh, man....I don't think I'll share that with my wife... Poor little leapard...
CTA Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 Thank you. His name is bo and he's quite a nutcase. He's my second cairn, so I knew what I was in for.
Hawkeye Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Welcome to the forum. Join the club - most of us have had a disastrous grooming experience at least once. He is beautiful anyway and I love the brindling color. He has the cutest expression on his face.
Hagar Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 I had a similar incident 3 years ago. I was going on a two week vacation and had reservations for Renny at a local pet resort. I had lost my groomer shortly before and he was overdue for a grooming, so I asked them to groom him a few days before my return. I specifically told them just a bath and comb out and MINIMAL trimming. When I picked him up, he looked a lot like Bo. The good news is it will grow back. In Renny's case it took a full year for it to grow back. Keep that in mind if you live in cold/snow country. He may be more sensitive to cold weather until his coat has fully grown back. I got lucky and found a new groomer who specializes in Terriers and has done a great job restoring and maintaining his coat.
josie&holly Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Bo is a very handsome boy anyhow - and his colouring is lovely. I think if Holly was shaved she would be similar in colour as when she is stripped she has this tigerish striping of the hair. www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
CTA Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 Thanks....makes me hopeful I can make him a cairn once more...
janis Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Bo is very cute! I love his color! Welcome. Lots of great people and advice here. They have helped me so many times with questions I've had with my dog. They are some of the most kindhearted people I've ever met on line!
jimnconnie Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Welcome to the Forum. Bo's coat will grow back, probably it will take several months, and it may be softer for a while. Your pictures reminded me of when I stripped Sophie's coat down to her underwear almost a year ago. My DW said Sophie looked like a cat after I stripped her. pindrop Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Bo has the sweetest expression and just a darn good looking pup. Welcome and glad you found this forum and hope to see many more postings - lots of lovely people here who are only too happy to help out or just talk about experiences. I have an 8 month old named Layla is she is due to be groomed very soon. Now I have the Mars Coat King - hubby and I will be attempting to do her ourselves. Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
CTA Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 Wow....look at that pile of hair you stripped! I hope you're correct and that it comes in after a few months. Here's a photo prior to "the incident".
janis Posted May 18, 2011 Posted May 18, 2011 Gosh look at the snow! Where do you live? Keep the snow there! Please! I just love Bo's coloring! Kirby has a camo jacket too!
CTA Posted May 18, 2011 Author Posted May 18, 2011 Not a fan of snow, huh? Yeah, me neither really. One question, could I use the King Coat in place of hand pulling and achieve results?
finncaraid Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 What a handsome lad Bo is- before & after!!! Amazing what a difference hair makes! Just did Finn, our 10 month old, yesterday using the Mars Coat-King, #10. Know he should have been done a while ago but I was scared he'd look like a goof by the time I was done. He turned out great just using a slicker brush, the Coat-King & a comb. And it took my husband & I about 50 minutes, start to finish. Best $40 I've ever spent!! Didn't use the Mars thing on his head- thought hand stripping would be better. So that's next. Just post any questions you have if you decide to diy it next time. The folks here have been most helpful & kind to me with my endless (it seems) grooming questions.---------------As far as making him a Cairn once more, it's doubtful that a little less hair could ever change 'em.
