Color Question?

Hi everybody :o)

So, I'm brand new to this forum and am in the final stages of purchasing a gorgeous cairn terrier puppy. I have been in the process of acquiring one for some years and have decided that now is the right time.

My question is that of color... Yes I know all the ins and outs of the color debate with this breed: It can change several times, they are brindle, they don't come in white, etc. But I am EXTREMELY keen on getting a dark brindle bitch. I was informed by the breeder that I have chosen that she has in fact the very pup I am after. Now when I went to view the puppy it was dramatically lighter than some other (dark brindle) pups I have come into contact with... She informs me that you can tell from the color of the hair growing around the puppies eye what color the coat will turn out, which (she believes) will be a dark brindle. I naturally would like to get a second and maybe third and fourth opinion...

So I have uploaded a photo of the puppy in question to get all of you're advice...

See below, Thanks and LET THE DEBATING BEGIN!!!

I don't have an answer for you, but I would take that cutie in a heartbeat! She looks exactly like Fudgie did when she was little! Fudgie is 4 1/2 years old and still dark. In the "new flooring" post you can see how dark she still is. Congratulations!! Life will not be the same!

Thanks so much I do think she is incredibly cute! I really love the color of your Fudgie, I do hope y little one turns out like that.. How long would you say it took for her to turn that dark color?

I am not familiar with puppy color as opposed to eventual adult color so I have to pass on the "debate" but I will reinforce Fudgie's owner by saying that as cute as the pictured puppy is, I wouldn't give a squat what color it was--I'd take it in a heart beat. Color doesn't make the Cairn.

I would not give a squat either! Oh! She is so very cute! :halo: Looks like a sweet healthy little girl. I would snap her up in a nanosecond. Congratulations!! A fun summer in store!

I think you better go get that beautiful pup before someone on here snatches it up first!! She's gorgeous, and will be, no matter her exact coloring as an adult. I still have no clue what color my 4 month old Cairn is going to be (and I thought I had to have a wheaten one), and honestly, now, he has so charmed himself into our hearts that we don't even think about it!

Go get her. You won't be sorry!

The puppy you are considering is very similar to Hogan's coloring as a puppy. He hasn't changed a lot, but there's always some mystery...I wouldn't hesitate, she looks wonderful!

I'm having trouble locating a female pup in my area I'll take her she's a beauty. I wish i could remember the web site but I can't it had pictures of owners dogs as pups then as 2 to 4 years old. Most dark brindles would get darker but there were a few that got so much lighter you would swear it wasn't the same dog. That is so interesting to me. Myself I think all the colors are beautiful.

I too, at first, was more interested in having a wheaton and actually picked the lightest of the females - and she has lightened up over the last several months. She is now 7 months and we could care less what color she is. I now realize that to have had that as a consideration was not as important as health first, temperment/disposition etc. etc. Your little tyke is absolutely gorgeous and I have no idea what eventual color she will be. Enjoy, because you too will find that color will fall to the bottom of the list very shortly.

I really could not tell much by the photos. As far as I have ever heard, you really cannot predect color...at all.

Both of my boys are brindles and the one who I thought would get really dark hasn't, and other is getting darker and redder...LOL

Don't let that cutie get away, she is so precious. I can't help much either on the coloring mine have changed colors a few times over.

Thanks everyone! It's unanimous, everyone agrees I shall get the puppy - which I can assure you I had no doubt of getting... I wish there was some way of knowing the eventual color but as stated before the color doesn't make a cairn and I'll love her unconditionally regardless

I've never heard the eye thing before, but I'm intrigued now!

The rule of thumb I always follow is if there is brindling in the coat and how much. If there is, I assume the dog will be dark by the time they are a few years old (as long as the coat is handstripping).

If it were the colour round eyes then Holly would be dark all over now! but she is red wheaton in body with very dark face and socks which makes her look very pretty!

I agree that the colour does not matter as long as the temperment is good.

Gorgeous pup! She looks dark/gray brindle to me, but they tend to change colors throughout their lives. I find classifying color really confusing! Ripley is very blonde with a black mask and a red stripe up her back. I think she is wheaton- but even then you have many different wheaton categories. It's confusing :confused1:

She is really a cutie! I'm sure that you will be so smitten you will love her color however it turns out. We were looking to get a dark brindle male. However, our breeder told me that of the 2 males available, the lighter one seemed to have a more mellow personality. That was the priority for me so we ended up with Bear! At 4 months, he is every color of the cairn rainbow right now but I'm betting he will be mostly a wheaton with a darker beard. Only time will tell! Please keep us posted on your new pup.

My breeder told me it was the base of the ear that shows most what colour they could end up that's what the breeder she bought her first ever pup from . You're puppy is gorgeous and looks quite dark to me

Aww...congratulations! Yes, please post some pictures and tell us all about your new baby, name...etc. Spring is a great time to bring a new puppy home, everything is blooming and you will be able to spend time outside with her. We have so many new babies on the forum - it's very exciting. We brought Radar home last July, it's hard to believe that it's been almost a year. Enjoy puppyhood!

I see that a few of you think it's a nice time for a puppy due to the season of spring but I must inform you that I'm in Melbourne, Australia and thus it will be winter lol. But no matter, as it just encourages more indoor cuddles  . As far as her name..... well...... at the risk of getting my head bitten off and sounding typically un-original I'm proud to say that I'm naming her Toto after the famous pooch from my all time favourite film
