Scruffys Mom
Dear Friends, many of you remember that I just lost my beloved Sparky. It is always hard to lose a pet, but this one was particularly hard, as he was so young. One day I am playing Frisbee with him the next day he s in crisis. We decided to get another pup. Way too much love to go around in this house not to share and provide a good home. As a board member for a pet rescue, I always search that path first. I will always have 2 Cairns as long as God, my health and my wallet allows. Rescues did not seem an option, and the vet and I feel that we lost Sparky as there had to have been an underlying illness that we did not know about (possibly Addisons) that jut would not let him get better. Sparky came from a puppy mill. This time I took the breeder route and was blessed to get one this quickly. I pick Spanky up tomorrow and will post pictures religiously. Sparky was a year younger than Scruffy and Scruffy was so young when I brought Sparky home, they became mother and pup instantly. Scruffy is older now (5) and any advice for this is appreciated. I have a 3 hr drive to pick Spanky up (my BF is driving me) Should I sit in the back with both dogs (Spanky n a carrier) or should I keep them separated (scruffy up front with me). Scruffy is not great with puppies in her face and it will take a lot of supervision for weeks to ensure we have harmony.

TazTalk
That is terrific news!!!! I was very much in your situation 2 years ago and we brought home a puppy within 3 weeks of losing a dear 14 year old. It worked out so well. We introduced the 2 dogs in our backyard, so not sure how to handle the car ride situation. Did you consider not bringing Scruffy and waiting to introduce them at home? Can't wait to see pics of Spanky!
pindrop
I am so happy to hear your good news. I really don't have any advice as leaving Scruffy at home for over six hours may not be an option. I would probably have the new baby in the crate in the backseat with Scruffy and you up front. You may want to then sit in the back at the half way mark with you in the middle and one dog on either side. Whatever you decide good luck - take care driving and post pictures of the new baby. Idaho Cairns
I have had this experience three times, twice introducing Cairn puppies to an adult dogs, one of which was twelve at the time and I just let nature take its path. I put the dogs together immediately once in a rest stop on the interstate and once at the Salt Lake airport and never had a problem either time. Dogs have a way of working things out with each other--they probably socialize quicker and more compatibly than humans do--all that "knowledge" is hard wired in their canine brains. In both cases we watched the older dog carefully to see their reaction, had them leashed so we could get quick control if it was necessary (it wasn't). I would take your adult dog for the ride and let the two meet on neutral ground and then enjoy each other on the ride back. Scruffy might surprise you in his acceptance of YOUR puppy. I think older dogs figure out that a puppy belongs in the mix--unless the older dog has some unusual quirky behaviors. A lot is going to be determined by your attitude--you are in charge and what you say goes for Scruffy and the pup--be as "matter of fact" as you can with the pairing and you and all concerned should be fine. Good luck forcing yourself to leave a Cairn puppy in a carrier for three hours--ours got lap carried during their trip home--we weren't about miss that bonding opportunity up close and personal. The older dog got plenty of encouragement all along the way. If you can keep your hands off a Cairn puppy for three hours after you first get it, you are icier than I can be. Take lots of digital pictures and get 'em up--I want to see him!

Hawkeye
Congratulations on your new baby!! Can't wait to hear more about the homecoming of Spanky. Pictures...pictures...pictures! I have also experience this. Last year we added a third dog to our family. We brought the two along for the car ride since it was going to be a long drive. We met the breeder in a park and let all the dogs out to meet each other for about an hour before heading back home (a 5 hour drive). We did bring a crate just in case, but never needed to set it up in car - it stayed in the trunk. I held the puppy (Radar) and Casey & Bailey stayed in the back seat. This worked out great for us. kjwarnold
We've done this twice now. Let the two dogs meet wherever you pick up the new puppy; if that's at the breeder's place, that will be just fine. Take two crates with you and you may just decide to let them ride home in their respective crates. We chose to let Packy stay out of his crate for a little while on the ride home to make him feel special. Then he went into his crate. We ended up having to stop and get Kirby (the new puppy) out because he got carsick. Glad we had paper towels, old towels and some wet wipes along! Kirby rode on my lap the rest of the way so he didn't get carsick again. Once you're home, be sure you let the older dog know he's still top dog. They can sort out their hierarchy on their own later, as the puppy gets older. Good luck and have fun! Nena
As I read your post I was so glad to hear of your new addition. My heart broke for your loss of Sparky, what a hard time that is. But when I read that you are getting a new pup what a joy. All the advise you have been getting sounds great to me. Someday, we plan to add another cairn (ofcourse) to our family, and I plan to carry this advise into my plans of the two meeting. Scruffys Mom
Hello friends, the trip went well. Scruffy had met Spanky at the breeders last week and was pretty good. I chose to take her today and sat in the back seat with both pups with a crate on standby. The ride home was effortless. Once home, Scruffy got moody and certainly corrected the pup, nothing too bad and did it a second time. I bought a baby play pen for the pup which is working out great and it was only $30.00 at Big Lots. I will crate train too, but I wanted a littel more freedom for him as I can not let him run around with Scruffy, When Scruffy went after Spanky, I scruffed her. I will put a choke collar back on her with a long leash and give her corrections if this persists. Any other ideas? She is still grieving and confused. The pup is great. Has played all day. Loves the Kong dino. My heart is happy!
cairnsby3
You are right Scruffy shouldn't harm the puppy, but don’t forget Scruffy is always first and gets lots of attention or a better way to say it is Spanky second. kjwarnold
And sometimes Spanky will justifiably need some correction from Scruffy! Just don't let it get out of hand, and they can probably work it out. Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney
TazTalk
Spanky is ADORABLE!! The first few days when we put Taz and Gypsy in the same area together, we kept a close eye on them - didn't leave them alone. After a few days it was no problem. But Gypsy was 12 at the time ... so she was not really intense about the new kid on the block. She did, however, get upset when those little puppy teeth got her. So, watch for Spanky trying to mouth or bite Scruffy.
hheldorfer
Welcome, Spanky! What a precious little face! Keep an eye on both of them until you're satisfied that Scruffy has accepted Spanky. It may take a while but don't get frustrated - they'll work things out eventually. In the meantime, make sure Scruffy gets lots of attention and praise him when he behaves around the new pup. Good luck and congratulations on your new furkid.

Hawkeye
What a cutie pie! I was given some good advice when I brought Radar home that I will share. I was concerned about Radar and Bailey fighting for top dog and was told to try not to interfere and let them figure it out unless it gets out of hand. Best advice. I did intervene a couple of times when they really were mad, but most of the time they worked it out. To this day Radar is a pushy son of gun, but Bailey holds his own with him and will push back when he feels like it. They have really bonded nicely. Good luck!
