Gus goes hiking

Recommended Posts

Now that the snow is gone from Vancouver Island, thought I'd share some photos of Gus hiking, exploring an abandoned mine.

So much fun.

Very cool! Gus is quite the explorer and looks quite at ease in his wild surroundings. Thanks for posting the pics.

Idaho Cairns

My dogs have never experienced a deep verdant woodland--I'll bet they would love all the new smells and hidden places to roam. I can see why your Gus has a bell on his collar! Neat.

Gus is a handsome devil. I bet that little bell sure helps when he gets himself in a predicament. Great pics! Wish our snow was gone.

Gus has been wearing the bell since he started hiking at 4 months old. It is my sanity-saver, as he can disappear into the greenery in a flash. He is so much better at staying on the trail these days that I've imagined a time when I won't need him to wear the bell. However...IF there are any bears or cougars around, the bell should warn them off. (Haven't seen any though.) Yes, that bell has been through some adventures - amazing that it has never fallen off his collar. If we can't see him or hear him jingling, it's a sure sign that he has found something really disgusting to eat (last time it was a mouldy sandwich) and I need to retrieve him!

I really like the idea of a bell. Demps disappeaars once in a while and makes my heart skip - I think I read that somewhere that they used to use bells on the dogs while hunting under ground? They could dig them out if they had trouble? Anyway I could use a bell.

Hi Islander what wonderful pictures of both the woodland and your pooch. He is a very handsome guy. I have been to Victoria myself and loved the island. Took the ferry over from Vancouver and spent a week there visiting with friends. Got to see the museum in Victoria and the botanical gardens. It's an awesome place and fortunately you really don't experience winter like the east coast. We still have at least three feet of snow but as we are expecting a lot more rain this week and weekend, it will help with all the melting.

I read that too - also that Cairns were bred to bark when excited because the bells weren't as effective as barking underground.

Now we are all paying for that selective breeding with "no bark" training!

Pindrop, glad you enjoyed our beautiful city & island. I was born & raised back east but after almost 40 years I am truly an Islander now. We might not have the loads of snow but it does rain....rather a lot...keeps the forest green.

Gus is sure sweet looking... but then I've yet to see a cairn who isn't "sweet," looking. Love the bell idea. I'm going to have to put one on Luigi. He seems to be mostly dirt color and we hike everyday. Sometimes I can't find him because he's digging and it's just his butt that's visible. I have to look for the wagging tail since he blends into the country side. We do have bear and cougar. Have seen both on our property. We carry bear spray and my husband always has a weapon-- retired cop so his habits die hard. We both know that we would spray and leave the area but we don't know how good Luigi would be. I'd hate to lose him to wildlife. I think he should be wearing my bear bell. Thanks for the reminder. Though my husband thinks my bear bell would only serve as a dinner bell for the bears!

Islander - he is very handsome! As always beautiful pictures. We were on the island in June - for 6 very short hours as part of a cruise, would love to have had more time to see it or come back for a longer visit!
