Tami
Ever since we got Fearghus last June we've fed and watered him from two small matching stainless steel bowls - the very small size. It's perfect for the amount of food we give him. Suddenly we weren't so sure about the water bowl. At first he'd signal that he needed more water by moving the empty bowl around .. I'd come and fill it back up so that Fearghus could drink. Fearghus then decided that he wasn't too thrilled about drinking in the family room at the back of the house when my husband and I were drinking in the living room. (He's pretty convinced that he's one of us, just shorter and perhaps not even that short.) The other day I looked up to see Fearghus come trotting into the living room carrying the water bowl in his mouth. He set it down on the carpet and proceeded to drink the water! Then he looked up with this extremely proud look on his face. (I so wish I had my video camera ready to capture that moment.) Now I've replaced the water bowl with one of those extra large heavy ceramic ones. Fearghus can't move it at all. No worries he says .. he now has figured out how to blow bubbles in all that extra water. Cheers, Tami
Idaho Cairns
When the bowl is out of water here, Sammi lets us know by picking the bowl up and throwing it across the kitchen floor--no if and's or but about it! I was downstairs working the other evening, the wife wasn't home and I heard a horrid crash upstairs--couldn't figure out what happened until I rushed up stairs to find Sammi sitting beside her empty water bowl looking at me. Bonnie is too small to pick the thing up but her big sister takes care of the matter. They never complain about an empty food bowl but water is an entirely different matter. janis
Mine has two stainless bowls slightly raised in a holder. When Kirby wants more he gets under it with his nose and them slams it into the wall and up and down until you do something about this NOW! These guys certainly know how to pull our stings and get immediate satisfaction!
lindasue
Being a Red Sox dog fan, Pegi has medium (water) and food (small)Red Sox bowls. She never finishes all the water, so I just change it daily. The bowls are the molded plastic so don't think she could lift it. She's also looking forward to pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training this weekend. Enough winter and snow here! Linda & Pegi
sanford
For the past 7 years that I've had cairn terriers, I've never let the water bowls run dry. Normally I would take some pride in this fact, but now I realize what fun and amusement I've been missing out on! I'm tempted to give this empty water bowl thing a try, but I know I'll end up being guilt-ridden and on top of that, Ruffy would never forgive me! FEAR THE CAIRN! hheldorfer
Allowing the water bowl to go dry is a capital offense in our house. The bowl is ceramic, way too heavy for either of our dogs to pick up. On the few occasions that the bowl has been empty one of them will nose it vigorously, causing his or her tags to clang against the side of the bowl. This is followed by a pathetic whimpering sound and miserable stares until one of us gets off our keester and fixes the problem.
pindrop
As usual - funny comments. Layla also uses those smaller aluminum bowls (that fit in a holder) but only one of them. That would be for her water as well. The other bowl (which should be used for food) frightens her. So it just sits there empty and she has a purple ceramic bowl (with paw prints on the side) that she eats her food out of. Oldfox is in charge of the food & water and he makes sure she always has water. Husband and dog missing ...25 cents reward for dog
Dempsy's Mom
Little Demps always lets me know when I have been slipping on my duties. He just sits by his dish till I get it - then all is well once again. He can blow bubbles too - usually it is in Diggers big dish. While I was on the computer the other night I heard him bubbling about. I turned to watch him and sure enough his nose was in Diggers dish and he was having fun. kjwarnold
If they can't move the water dish around, I get barked at if it happens to run dry. We usually watch it and fill it as needed, but you can be sure they let us know if we've fallen down on the job of catering to their every need. Zekey's Mom
I'm so bad at reading signals, that between the two Cairns and the two cats, the bowls have gone dry on occasion. I do try to keep bowls filed in various places, like the LR and BR. For all those with bubbling Cairns, I would pay good money to see that! Someone's GOT to capture that on video!! 2littleterrors
Last summer, I put a big 5 gal auto waterer out on the back porch. Kenzie thought that it was the great thing on Earth!! She would get her front paws in it and dig and dig until she (and the whole deck) were completely soaked. She loves playing in water more than most labs do!! The only thing better than owning a Cairn is owning two!
jodi0553
We have to allow the water bowl to go dry because Currey gets sometimes excited about drinking after serious play and will drink till he vomits. He has just one of those plastic combo food and water dishes (I think it is a cat dish). He *vigorously* shoves his dish around. Often, he'll bury it when he is done drinking or eating but shoving it to under the kitchen table and then air burying with his nose. That is another reason to go light on the water - he might be done drinking and the bowl can be half full and he'll shove it 10 ft across the room anyway, leaving a lovely water trail in its wake. Same goes for the food....I find kibble in crazy places when I sweep! A couple weeks ago, we started a construction project in the room where his dish lives and we took the cover off the low wall heat return vent. Well, one day last week I went to fill Currey's dish and started looking under furniture and around the room for it and couldn't find it anyway. I finally figured out that he had successfully shoved it into the ~ 12 inch opening on the wall at floor level! The dish completely flipped over into our HVAC system, but fortunately it was completely empty. I thought he had done it accidentally, so I didn't think much of it till I caught him trying to shove a FULL dish down there this past weekend. He was actually trying to move his placemat that was slightly blocking access! I LOVE the stories about the dogs that actually carry or throw their dishes. What hilarious little dogs! Zekey's Mom
While Zekey and Gavin don't mess with their water bowls, Zekey will frequently carry around the paper bowls that I use for cat food. The very first time he did it, I cracked up -- it reminded me of Snoopy carrying his supper dish! (I think that's Flat Stanley in the dish -- only pic I could find on the web was of a wall sculpture at the Schultz museum.)
janis
Do any of yours freak out when you have to move their dish? Kirby will get really upset if I have to move it out of the kitchen when mopping. Once I had the audicity to put a plant stand within 5 feet of hisfood area. He wouldn't go near it! Hawkeye
Now that we have three little terrors the bowl runs dry more often than I would like to admit. We have a ceramic water bowl so they can't pick it up but it does travel and clang against the wall. Radar will step into the bowl with his front paws and dig, dig, dig. Bailey is the water theft - he feels the bowl should be empty at all times and will drink it until dry. (I've had him vet checked for possible medical issues, but they found nothing wrong.) Bailey will lick the empty bowl and his tags will clang against the side. And poor Casey will just sit there or sleep there until it is refilled. She will also drink too much(sometimes)and then spit it up. They do get their point across.
