Little Layla

As oldfox and I haven't posted an updated picture in a while, I thought I'd post one today from yesterday. She has come a long way from when we first brought her home a little over two months ago. Her housetraining has improved remarkably - she now asks to go out (most of the time - don't want to jinx ourselves here). As she has always slept thru the night - no improvements there. She is also no longer picking up rocks (that may be due to the fact that they are all now snow covered) - and she is no longer begging for food at the table while we are eating. However, the biggest change is her ability to now not only jump off the couch in a single leap, but now can jump up onto the couch - as well as the highbacked loveseat to see out her favorite window. She has also calmed down somewhat - and you can tell she is now familiar with her home and loves laying in front of the wood burning stove. Her ears are now standing up (without oldfox having to put popsicle sticks and rubber bands - ) Whether it is her adapting to us or us adapting to her, (or both) life has now taken on a more normal and relaxed atmosphere.

I had posted elsewhere the fact that she will be having her spay operation in late February and am nervous about this - however as a lot of you commented, there should be no earthly reason that she should be held overnight. I will be calling the vet's office Monday to determine the whys as whether she will have supervision. Should I not be happy with the results of their answers, we will be looking elsewhere to have this procedure done. I'll let you know the outcome of this conversation tomorrow evening. Thank you all who brought this to my attention. Hope you have enjoyed our updates on her growth with all the pictures and videos that have been posted.

A home with a Cairn puppy is a happy home and I envy you a bunch having Layla around. I see those ears are coming right along! It is fun to have little ones here on the board --vicarious ownership is fun too.

Speaking of which, has anyone heard from Rattlesnake Gal? I haven't heard a thing since before the holidays--wonder how her pup is doing with the older dog.

I would like to wrestle with little Layla. I get a kick out of the hair in front of her eyes - do you suppose that slows her down any? :P She's adorable.

She really is a little sweetie and the ears!!!! They make me smile when they're so small, they seem all legs and ears. I remember Scruff last Summer looking all gangly but he grew into his ears Lol

I hope you get a satisfactory ending regarding Layla's over night stay when you speak to your vet tomorrow.

One more comment on staying over at the vets - Pegi didn't. I dropped her off around 8 and picked her up about 5. She was pretty out of it, but more comfortable at home.

Layla is such a sweetie! In the pic, it looks like her fur is now silvery. What does it look like in person?

As for the vet, I'm not a good doggy nurse. I'd rather that they stay there until they are fully awake.

When Gavin had his neuter/knee surgery, I was about to travel, so they kept him for a week. I visited him the day after his surgery, and got a peek at the "hospital ward" where all the post-surgery/hospital kenneling patients were kept. For wome reason, it made me feel better that vet techs sat on the floor with some of their charges, or held them in their laps for a while before returning them to their cages. Plus, this particular vet hospital had vets and staff there 24 hrs/day. That makes a difference. If Layla will be at a small practice where everyone goes home for the night, then you may as well bring her home. Keep us posted.

Zekey's Mom - Hair silvery? In fact it is - when you lift up the outer coat, it's almost platinum (very very light cream) Not sure if this will change over time but the one thing we have noticed since we got her is the fact that her hair has lightened considerably. Who knows what color it will eventually be.

I hope she grows into those ears too. I distinctly remember remarking on the first time we saw the puppies - with their little (tiny) ears (reminded me of baby seals) - projecting off to the side and asked the breeder - is that their ears? Aren't they rather tiny? She laughed and said - just wait - they will grow. And guess what - sure enough!

lol...she will grow into her ears soon. Layla is so precious - enjoy her puppyhood it does go by fast. As far as the vet question, I had our females so many years ago I can't remember if they had to stay overnight (the mind is going to mush).

Pindrop, I had to go back to my post about Sassy's fixing and tooth clean from last February, because I could not remember if she stayed overnight or not. Well she did.

"Just got a call from the Vets office and Sassy is out of surgery and resting. She had no problems during her surgery, although since she has had a couple litters it did take a little longer than a standard one. She also had one cracked tooth and they removed that.

Poor little kid was kind of hungry this morning and wondering why I wasn't giving her anything to eat. So now she will get overfed for the rest of her life in order to over-compensate for that. :P

I get her back tomorrow mid-morning and can't wait."

She was fine and I trusted my vet to keep her overnight as the clinic is staffed overnight. He is a former Cairn owner himself. Her circumstances are certainly different than Layla's though.

If there is no one there to monitor, what possible justification is there for keeping them overnight other than it is convenient for the early morning follow up and of course the kennel fee?
