Midwest Snow

We had a nice snowfall last night, about 5", here in central Missouri. The dogs were dying to get out and play in it today. This picture was taken before they ran down to the lake and waded, then ran around in the snow some more. By the time they came in, I had to take a blow dryer to them to get all the snowballs off. They sure had fun though!

Kirby is on the left and Packy is on the right.

Cairns, I believe, think they are small Huskies. I've only had one that did not adore snow. Sure do like those two dogs of yours.

You're absolutely right -- they think they could be sled dogs! I'm not sure how Packy did it today, but he had all his fur standing on end so that he looked like a complete furball. Now that they're back in the house, it's back to normal. Maybe that helps him stay warm or something because he sure didn't want to come in.

They are definately good looking pups and appear to be having a great time in the snow.

I see my dogs do this quite often in cold weather--it is a kind of a shrug, a muscle thing that tightens the skin--very similar, I think, as humans have out in the cold. It helps make the hair a natural insulator by allowing for the flow of air thru both layers of their coat--the same theory that makes down clothing so effective. They do look funny tho particularly around the head--they look like little lions with manes or like they are electrified! Cairns are funny little creatures and ALWAYS entertaining--I could never go back to predictable, sedate, business like dogs-- Labs or the slavishly "nice" Golden Retrievers--give those little snots from Scotland!

Two Cairns are a blast! It was great with just one, but they are even more entertaining with two. They just cracked us up last night after they came in from their last walk of the evening. Packy really gets going in this weather, and he was just nutsy funny. The whole house was a zoomin' racetrack for a while and they were real clowns. They panted for 30 minutes after we went up to bed!

We are getting killed w/snow in Mass today; have about 12" and it's still coming down. Roads are clear though and plow man has done the driveways. Took Pegi out around 10 for a walk around the neighborhood; she LOVED it. No cars, lots of people out to pet her, and someone even got a new puppy this week that she met! I did put her new coat on her that Santa brought; she promptly undid it and left it in the middle of a street! Guess I know her feelings about wearing a coat now....
