One year with Sassy

One year ago at this time I was getting ready to drive to the breeder to collect Sassy and bring her to her new home. I was excited and nervous and sad all at the same time, excited at the new relationship that was about to begin, nervous that it might not go well and sad that just a month before I had to put down my previous pal.

On the ride home she tossed her cookies in the carrier, I guess she was nervous too. By the end of the day she fell asleep in my lap. So much for nervous.

I am still excited every day, because Sassy is just the sweetest furball you could ever imagine. She loves to sit on your lap and get head and belly rubs, she could do that for hours. She also loves to stand on your chest and lick your face and neck, she could do that for hours as well, I can only stand it for a couple seconds at a time, because it tickles so much. She growls at me when I try to move her off. I can’t help laughing.

I am still excited every day, because when I come home from work she grabs two egg baby eggs and stuffs them in her mouth and comes running at me because she is excited to see me and wants me to play with her. Sometimes she will even do the scooting zoomies. We then proceed down the stairs for her walk and she will deposit the eggs at the door so when we get back from the walk I have something to throw to her when she again reaches the top of the stairs. She will catch it and spit it out so that it rolls down the stairs, meaning do it again.

When we are on a walk and she sees someone she knows she will run towards them to get petted and when she is obliged she will run around in circles in thanks and tangle all in her 24 foot retractable leash. Rude of me to allow this I know, but funny none the less. I call it the “Sassy Tangle”.

Most of the time she is just so mellow that I wonder if she really is a Cairn. When she spots a rabbit or a squirrel all doubts disappear.

She is very attentive, especially during dinner as she likes to keep a clean house, if any food hits the floor, she cleans it up immediately. Don’t want any stains, noway, nohow.

She loves her treats and will coming flying in the kitchen and skid on all fours when she hears the lid coming off the treat jar.

Sassy will be 6 years old in January and she has her quirks, like she won’t play with toys that are white, and she finds clumps of lawn mower cut grass a delicacy. But I think I will keep her.

There are still times that I am still sad for my previous pal, but Sassy helps me through those moments.

She is a calming, steady and patient presence. She is lying right next to me now as a write this, all the while I know she is primed to go for a walk, but she will wait silently until I am done. I explained to her that I am singing her praises and she said “Carry on, I can wait”.

So for our first anniversary I am giving her 365 bully sticks, one for every day. Guess I better get to the pet store and get a bunch of doggy bags, tomorrow could be messy.post-4554-043169300 1287852699_thumb.jpg

Thanks everyone for the warm responses. Sassy is just about through with bully stick #203. :P She appears to be waning. Doubt she will finish them all before the stroke of midnight. :surrender: Of course you all know I'm kidding, right? About the bully sticks. ;)

Great story! All happy at your house, with many blessings everyday! Knew you were kidding about the bully sticks; still had to wipe the drool from the screen (as I read this story out loud to the furkids). Drool from the crowd, not the human.

Really great to read such love & care from both human & Cairn!

As I read your post I was chuckling and relating to so much your Cairn does... Jock must be related to Sassy .

May you have many many more years with your very best pal... Happy 6th anniversary (January)

That's too funny! You've got to wonder what is in her past that gave her certain quirks.

Congratulations on your first year together! And unless you recently won the lottery, I didn't think Sassy'd be getting 365 bully sticks!!!

What a nice story! Glad you have each other also. Fudgie does not like any white vehicles. If one drives by "her" window all #@#@%$# breaks loose from her. Once it is out of sight, she is back to her normal self. Very funny to watch! Enjoy your little friend!
