Has anybody seen the Youtube video of the doe attacking a border collie on a suburban street?

It almost happened to Gus and me twice while walking in the grounds of Government House in Victoria BC. Gus was on leash, the first time we were walking through part of the grounds that are left as woodland. All of a sudden a deer charged us from behind, jumped over Gus and I think she clipped him with her hoof because he yelped. I picked him up and tried to shoo the deer away but she faced up to us in a way that seemed threatening to me - we got away from her as fast as we could. Gus didn't seem injured, abraded or sore, so maybe he yelped in fear. I figured that there was a fawn stashed nearby in the high grass. It was afterwards that I saw the video on Youtube - that border colliee was badly injured.

Since then I've heard of more incidents of does charging people walking dogs, including one dog killed.

So today we were walking around Government House, but in the formal gardens close to the street, and I spotted a deer walking around the rose garden. There were a couple of people not far away and she wasn't paying any attention to them. But as soon as she spotted or smelled Gus, she started cantering towards us - we went very quickly in the other direction.

I never thought I would be scared of a doe, but these incidents were scary. These urban deer are getting nervy!

(All) Mothers become she wolves when they think their babies are at risk.. I have had the tiniest of birds dive bomb us when we got to close to their young.

Glad you and Gus were not injured! And I thought I had heard the boarder collie came out of that attack not injured? Although you wonder how he could... those little hooves are pretty sharp!

They are scary, those females. We will start calving again in March and I will keep Demps away from the cattle. Demps loves to play with the cows, but that has been without babies at their sides and only with one cow. Those moms aren't playing when their young is involved and you can read it all over their faces. Actually, I have had a few times of up close and personal.

Glad you guys are ok. Stay alert & stay low Gus! Mom make sure you are wearing good running shoes. :) (Joking at quite a serious situation - so seriously, stay on your toes.)

Wow, that's scary! I hope she calms down about Gus eventually so you can get back to your walking routine. BTW, I love the grounds of Government House! I stayed at Fairholme Manor B&B on my honeymoon (property is adjacent on Rockland) and have had to come back since. Beautiful part of a gorgeous city! I dream of their breakfasts :)

Hi Islander! We visited Victoria on our cruise in June, it was beautiful! We live in a fairly rural area and deer come into our family's yards daily. Kirby charged a big doe and she just stood there and looked at him. Of course he did his cairn thing and barked like crazy... finally she blew at him and stomped - I was really afraid she would stomp him (yes he was off the leash but we have since learned our lesson "Cairns are not to be trused off the leash!). She finally turned and jumped the fence into a thicket. But, she or other deer are in the yard daily and he runs around and scents the trail with the same furry he digs with! Glad you weren't hurt! :D

Oh my...how frightening. Glad to hear you and Gus were not hurt. I have the deer roaming in our yards all the time and when we take walks they are always around lurking in the woods. One time when my hubby took the dogs for a walk, he actually had one start to follow him home! Our neighbors were laughing as he's walking down the street with our two and a young deer trailing behind them...what a site.

Reading about your experience I will keep our guard up when we see (esp) the mother deers with their young.

Gus & I appreciate the good wishes!

Victoria is a beautiful place to live, and there are many many lovely dog walks - my #1 favourite is Mount Douglas Park where I've seen more deer on the surrounding residential streets than inside it. I think they prefer lawns and flowers to the wild bushes!

The deer situation has gotten so out of hand this summer that talk of a cull has been circulating - a couple of years ago a doe walked into a toy store on the main street of downtown! (Didn't stay long or buy any toys.)

In recent weeks there have also been two cougar sightings at one of our favourite parks so we're staying away from there for awhile. Gus would be a tasty morsel of cougar bait for sure.

Re: the border collie in the video, it was injured but survived. The dog that was killed was stomped to death in its own back yard in the suburbs of Victoria.

At the moment Gus's wildlife interest (obsession?) is focused on the squirrels that are decimating our hazelnut trees. I wish he could scare them a tiny bit, but they just laugh at him.

Gus & I appreciate the good wishes!

Ahhh yes as a resident of Edmonton I am totally green with envy! But on the weird side we can relate to wild life within the City. We have had a confirmed sighting of a black bear in our river valley (which runs right thru the heart of Edmonton) plus we are in the middle of the prairies! Perhaps all these animals that should be out in their natural habitat are being forced to move due to development destroying their homes.

Wow you guys. Ever consider moving to the country?

Oscar and I saw a Doe and Fawn early one morning during a walk. We live in a town, the homes each have a 1/2 acre to them, but not very wooded or secluded.

Oscar stopped in his tracks looking up a drive way, i thought he was looking at a fake dear statue. Then it moved and the Fawn came beside her. What a great site. They trotted calmly; but I think we were far enough away.
