Cairn or Labrador?

Are there lots of Cairn retrievers out there?

Gus is one who absolutely loves the water, whether it is ocean, lake, river, mud puddle or garden hose.

Here he is last weekend swimming and fetching sticks at the river - one of his regular Saturday hikes when he gets to be off leash for 4 or 5 blissful hours.

Oh, how cute! He looks so happy! Unfortunately, I do not have Cairn retrievers. Both of mine want nothing to do with a body of water. It looks like fun, though!

That looks like fun!! I want Dempsy to get used to water. Bought a pool for him and he does like it. Over the 4th I took him to the lake (I had visions of him swimming out to retrieve one of the dozen toys I brought along) .... he wanted nothing to do with the water and "what are those big curly que wet things that keep slapping against me?" :confused1: ... We need to borrow Gus.

I will try again on a calmer day with no people and other dogs around. Silly me - I obviously wasn't thinking about all the other activities that would be going on around us. Dempsy did enjoy the parade. We had a great first 4th together. Fireworks did not bother him at all.

Gus has never needed any encouragement to get in the water, but if any of his pack-people are swimming, he won't get out. Maybe Dempsy needs company in the lake!

Here's another shot of Gus fishing in the Pacific Ocean.

Packy has that same look of intense concentration when he fishes! It's funny how they look just the same.

Nena is also a retriever. She loves to fetch sticks and frizbees. If we are by a lake or small creek she is the first one in. I don't have a pool but she has a baby pool, I use it for her to get cooled off, but it is not something she loves to go in.

While our older dog really prefers feeling around the bottom for rocks and then ducking under to retrieve them she will also retrieve objects thrown for her. The problem is, of course, her little irritating companion is always waiting at the end to kibbutz on the retrieve, especially when sticks are involved! The little spitfire latches on to the stick, much to the disgust of the older dog.

Ever once in awhile, if the jerk is forcefull enough and the timing is just right, Sammi gets her revenge on her "little sister" by making Bonnie pay for her tenacity with a good old face plant in the cold water! Bonnie is never amused with the soaking.

Sammi and Bonnie look like typical siblings! I love the face plant.

Here is Gus with his canine best buddy - a Great Pyrenees/Malamute mix who helped raise him.

My daughter is raising a new Cairn pup with a Pyrenees mix! What great animals those big white dogs are! So gentle and so sweet. But they do make a strange pair size wise--Mutt and Jeff! Looks like your Gus is just daring the big dog to come in and join him only to dash away at the last minute--I have seen that behavior before--the old "Cairn Taunt"! They seem to get especially proud of themselves in the water.

Here's my daughter's two Alaska dogs.

What beautiful dogs! It is wonderful how well Big & Little can get along. Gus does love to torment Sasha - tries to get her to play with his Cairn growl, and just about jumps on her back.

Here they are hiking - note Gus' bell. It's more to keep track of him than to keep the bears away.

I'm sitting here in my office, having just finished a big project and -- I'm wondering -- why don't I retire so I can go off to places like that on gorgeous days with my dogs?

There are days when I love my job. And then there are days when I see those pictures and I think I should be at the lake or the river and letting the dogs cool their feet and take a little swim!

Gorgeous photos.

Kathryn, your day will come as it does for all of us. I envy your youth and purpose, the kids, the job, and the long years you have to spend with this wonderful breed of dogs. My time is short and I have to wonder if the two I have now are the last two I will share my life with. So it all balances out for each of us. That wonderful circle we are part of.

I must admit that after a career of dealing with the public, it is nice to only have a couple of Cairns to interact with. Some days when my wife is visiting with her relatives--it is just the girls and me. At least, since they are Cairns, when you say "What a beautiful day!" they act like they know what you are saying and that natural jauntiness they bring to every situation fits the response as well.

Be patient and enjoy the moment is the only advice I can give--live like your Cairn does--in the exact instant. It's all good.
