Doggy Tricks

I'm looking to teach Duffy a new trick again, but I'm sheer out of ideas! So far he knows the basic commands-sit, stay, come, lay down, roll over, jump, and stand. I've also taught him hi-five (shake), perch (beg), bang (play dead) and What's That Smell (he covers his nose :P). Any thoughts are welcome! :)

Here's an advanced trick that's adaptable to several storylines: roll into a blanket.

At a terrier-only performance summit during an evening Tricks contest I saw a lil' Norwich do this as part of a terribly cute routine. It involved a pantomime trip across country, reading a story, playing a piano, saying his prayers, and finally, putting himself to bed. The last bit was laying down on a blanket (towel), grabbing a corner of it, then rolling over, wrapping himself up in it. It was terribly sweet.

I saw the same blanket trick being done by a larger dog as part of a school Fire Safety education program - illustrating the "stop, drop, and roll" technique to self-extinguish burning clothes.

101 Dog Tricks by Kyra Sundance

http://www.amazon.com/101-Dog-Tricks-Activities-Challenge/dp/1592533256/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273509987&sr=1-1

Is a great book for tricks. Some are geared for larger dogs and acrobatic owners :ermm: ...so for real people with Cairns it is really on 95 Dog tricks . What I like about this book..is that she shows how to teach basic behaviors and then chains them to make an impressive looking trick.

I found my copy in the discount bin at B&N.

Raise your expectations for what your Cairn can do....and try very hard to meet your Cairn's expectations of you.

This is one of the tricks in the Sundance book.

I taught my last dog, Jamaica, (a cute little Cairn mix) to jump for a stick. Actually, I didn't teach her. She taught herself. haha

Here's how it went. I would hold out a small stick and she would run by taking the stick out of my hand as she passed. I had to bend down a little so she could get it, otherwise it would be too high. She was very cute sailing through the air for a stick.

A friend is teaching her dog how to "Bow." It's just the down dog position they get into when they stretch, but it looks pretty good.

My favorite trick that Maxwell does is a "touchdown dance" (great fun during football season).

Wen I yell "TOUCHDOWN!" Maxwell stands on his back legs with his front legs up in the air. Really easy to teach.

One of my daughters taught Pegi to dance. Just hold up a cookie and make a circular motion with your hand; they follow and boogie along! Very cute.

Holly knows the come get treat too! The only other one she knows is when we get upstairs - I tell her to go to bed and she does and curls up!
