remltr
Yesterday after work I was walking Sassy and we came upon an area across the street that has a grassy section that butts up to a wetland and is bordered by a wood fence. This grassy section is where the rabbits come to chew on the grass and Sassy is fond of chasing them when they are feeding. From the sidewalk to the fence is about 20 feet. So Sassy spots her prey from the sidewalk about the half the distance to the fence. She slows down, she crouches a little bit and begins her stalk. She approaches and about at two feet away she pounces only to find that she has just got a mouthful of dirt from a hole a mole has piled up from its tunneling. I laughed so hard I almost had tears. Of course I knew what she was approaching and had her on leash, but I couldn't resist letting her go all the way, because I never do with the real thing. I wonder what she was thinking when she approached, "He's just going to sit there and let me get him? Too easy!!" and then when she got her mouthful of dirt, "That sure doesn't taste anything at all like I expected it to." If I only had a video camera, that would have been a $100,000 winner on AFV, watching the explosion of dirt and her spitting it out. The joy of Sassy is never ending, just like when she approaches someone on our walks and wants to say hello, and that person responds with a little head rub. She will then go into the scooting zoomies on a 24 foot leash and run circles for about 10 seconds as her way of saying thank you for acknowledging me. Sassy Jan 22, 2005 AM. CH. hheldorfer
Wish I could have seen it! Poor thing - she was giving it her best shot and it was all for nothing.

tlwtheq
Yes, we had another mole fatality in the back yard yesterday. Sweet Pea has been relentless in her tunneling and schnuffling. Poor mole. Max and Nelly
remltr
Well it happened again last evening. We approached the grassy area via the sidewalk which is lined with bushes. Just as we got to the last bush I can see three rabbits munching on the grass and a couple squirrels on top of the fence. Sassy goes into low and slow stealth mode then pounces on a flower that is dangling from the last bush. She needs glasses. She has to be far sighted, because she can see a rabbit a block away, but this up close stuff just has her baffled. She eventually went after the live critters when she realized that the flower was not what she expected. When they ran through the fence to make their escape, she charged the fence and barked at them to come back. And then she whimpered for about 30 seconds while I tried to redirect her attention to something else. Sassy Jan 22, 2005 AM. CH.
