Certified Yard Inspector

Zekey's Mom

Recommended Posts

Zekey is too weird. Every night I sit out in the back yard and enjoy the evening. No loafing for Zekey! He needs to sniff every square inch of the yard, occasionaly stopping to paw at the ground, or roll in something especially smelly.

I often wonder what scents he picks up... squirrel crossings, rabbits that paused in the yard?

Without fail, he is on duty every night, even when he went over every inch of ground the day before. Silly boy!

It is a fascinating world out there for these guys. I'd swear ours do a repeat grid search everytime they are out (5-6 times a day)!

Bailey and Casey are alway on duty when we go outside as well. I love how that can smell one blade of grass for ever and then, like you said roll in STUFF.

Methinks there's something familiar about that! Sweet Pea is the most avid sniffer.. :)

When I let Holly out onto garden in morning she has to do a full inspection of the whole of garden before she can do her squat........ every bush etc has to be sniffed, sniffed again and checked out. Once everything inspected she will then go round again to decide where she favours for her morning wee!

There are two different approaches at my house:

Ziggy, the non-Cairn - Find the first, most convenient spot and pee on it. Turn, sniff to make sure pee is still there, then return to house.

Buffy, the Cairn -

1. Stretch lazily on the patio while taking in a deep breath of the fine spring air.

2. Pause at end of patio while performing a visual survey of the yard.

3. Hop off patio. Repeat stretch.

4. Following a semi-circular pattern beginning near the house, begin sniffing each blade of grass. Re-sniff blades containing the aforementioned Ziggy pee. Gradually widen the search area until most of the lawn has been thoroughly examined.

5. Trot to the choicest spot and pee on it.

6. Repeat sniffing procedure, following the edges of the garden until an appropriate poop spot has been identified.

7. Poop.

8. Turn and sniff poop. Mentally compare the odor of today's poop with all previous days.

9. Bark a few times at nothing in particular.

10. Return to house.

Mine go out at a dead run. Spring first, she enforces "ladies first" and is always first out the door, run across the patio, leap the last 3 steps of the landscaping, make a big circle of around the yard to be sure no bunnies are there that have to be chased. THEN, Shiner takes care of whatever business he has to and runs back to the house throwing himself against the slider to let me know he is starving and ready to eat. Meanwhile Spring takes care of all her business, comes back to the door and screams to be let in. After breakfast they go out again (same dead run, in case bunnies have invaded), sniff all over, roll in stinky stuff and eat bunny poop.

performing a visual survey of the yard

After Zekey completes his inspection, he'll get up high (on a patio table), settle down, and keep lookout for wayward squirrels and bunnies.
