Sue G Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 OK...so I have heard so much about Bully Sticks from everyone here that I decided to buy one for Ozzy to try. He LOVED the thing, but at $4+ dollars a pop, how can anyone afford them? He ate the whole thing in less than 15 minutes! I thought that at that cost it would be a chew treat that would last for awhile. Do all dogs EAT the darn things like that? Or do I just have an over zealous little boy? I won't be buying those very often....
Autumn & Lola Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 When we first got them for Molly, it took her a little while to knaw on it and eat it (maybe 45 minutes). Now, she wolfs them down. We buy 12" triple braided bully sticks for $11.00 a piece, and cut them into 3 pieces (Hubby does it, as they are very difficult to cut). YES they are very expensive! I always wished everyone on this board lived close together so we could buy them in bulk at a big discount. LOL! We give more marrow bones than bully sticks now as they are much cheaper, and save the bully sticks for *special treats*!
Tracy A. Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 if the bully stick is too dried out then can crunch through them quickly... also if the bully stick is too thin. Per a recommendation of another forum user, I tried a company called 'best bully sticks.com' they are on the web and i've been realy happy with the product. I get the thickest bully sticks I can- they last the longest. Tracy, Amos, Walter, Brattwrust & Mettwurst a.k.a The Gremlins
bradl Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 Agreed that they are a premium treat! Another tip is to not cut them down. As long as they are not knocking down lamps and whatnot by dragging around too long a stick, we find it gives them more interest and exercise to manipulate the longer sticks. Plus you're throwing away less (for sure toss them when they approach a size that could in any way be swallowed). With multiple dogs, another trick we learned is to toss out one more than there are dogs. That way, after whoever's being bossy goes around and takes whomever's stick s/he wants, there is always one left over for the loser to claim. If you don't keep track of them though, you are liable to end up with a stick buried in your sofa. Or worse, outside. You do NOT want to find a bully stick that's been wet for a couple of weeks. Oliver's Mom Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 We have a bully stick lover here too! We find that the regular sticks or the barbells are his favorite. It's actually really funny when giving him one because he "courts" it He drops it, runs around it barking and growling and then looking at us as if to say "can I REALLY have it??" It's cute. We just recently found the regular stick but it's about 3 feet long!! It was like heaven and only $9.99. I believe we cut it down to eight 5" long bully's that last him about 45 minutes to an hour. I think this is the best deal if your store has them at this size. Good luck and I hope you find more affordable bully's for Ozzy (I'm sure he does too!)
Laura Schoenheider Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 Yeah I recently found some for Miley it took her about 2 hour over a day and a half to chew it till the end, But yes she loves them, but they are expensive
TazTalk Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 I have found bully sticks in the couch, on my bed (gross!) and in the yard. They are pretty sneaky about hiding them! We've been doing bestbullysticks.com for quite awhile and are very happy with them. I also get the thickest ones possible - they take longer to destroy.
lindasue Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 Amazon also has them very reasonably priced; think I got 30 of them for $30; and they are made in USA. Pegi likes to have about 6 of them laid out on the kitchen floor; she sniffs all of them, circles them then chooses the ones she wants! Linda & Pegi
kjwarnold Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 I have one strong chewer and one more delicate chewer here. Packy can chew down a 12" bully stick in under 30 minutes. Kirby has to stop after about 15 minutes because his jaws get tired. I routinely scope out the pet stores to see who might have a sale on bully sticks and pick them up when I find a good price. I have also ordered them online. The 3' long ones are great -- DH cuts them into 12" pieces because, as Brad said, the longer ones are more of a challenge and you don't waste as much when you have to take the little end pieces away. And no, you don't want to find a soggy piece of bully stick, or smell it! Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney
Sue G Posted May 3, 2010 Author Posted May 3, 2010 There is NO WAY I will ever find a bully Stick in the couch. Ozzy would not leave his until it was completely gone. I have to admit that at that price I bought the smallest one, but honestly I don't think it would make much of a difference. He LOVED it!
