Happy Belated 3rd Birthday wishes for Murphy

On March 24, 2006 a precious Miniature Schnauzer, Arthur, died from neglect. It is a tragic story that still leaves me filled with regret. Arthur was not his real name; it was a name I gave him because he reminded me of King Arthur. He was very noble and handsome, and was quite the gentleman. He belonged to my mother's neighbor, a man who drank way too much and paid way too little attention to Arthur. I bonded with Arthur when I visited my mom and he wandered into her yard. He took to me immediately. I wanted so badly to rescue Arthur, but I lived 400 miles away and the man did not want to surrender him. One day, Arthur became ill and made his way to my mom's patio. He died in my mom's arms on the way to the vet's. He was only two years old. His owner never claimed his little body, so I had him cremated and his urn is on my mantle. He is home. I was devastated by his death, and felt so much guilt that I hadn't just scooped him up and taken him home with me. I felt I had failed him.

On March 24, 2007, Murphy the Cairn came into the world. He was adopted out and shuttled from owner to owner. He finally ended up in the city pound, dog #127. When his last owner surrendered him, he told the staff at the pound, "You can euthanize him, we don't want him anymore". He was just shy of his 2nd birthday.

Here is where the story gets interesting. Miniature Schnauzer Rescue happened to be in the pound looking for Schnauzers the day before Murphy was scheduled to be euthanized. They knew he was a Cairn, but rescued him anyway, and put his picture on their website. By some strange twist of fate, late one night I browsed their website, all the while knowing that I really wanted a Cairn. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw his photo. He looked sickly and there was no light in his eyes, but I knew instantly he belonged with me.

My husband and I drove the 200 miles to meet him. The moment he saw us, he ran to my husband and jumped into his arms. He was ours. Imagine our surprise, when we got his papers and saw his birthdate, March 24th. It seemed so much more than coincidence.

Because Murphy's birthday is the day Arthur died and a particularly bittersweet day for us, I forgot to post a birthday greeting for Murphy, but he did have a lovely party. Would you help me wish Murphy a belated Happy 3rd Birthday and hold a good thought in your heart for Arthur? We may have rescued Murphy, but he has helped heal our hearts. And that is no small thing. :cake:

 Oh, that story really got to me. Got a tissue?

Best wishes to Murphy and God bless you for saving him. And I'll bet Arthur will be waiting for you at the bridge, just because of your concern.

Happy Birthday Murphy. I can't remember the whole poem, but I remember these lines:

Some people come into our lives for a season, some people come into our lives for a reason.

I'd like to add:

Some dogs come into our lives for a season, some dogs come into our lives for a reason.

Its wonderful that you found Murphy.
