Cairns and snow

The forecast says SNOW for this weekend. (YIPPPPPPPEEEEE!!!!) Molly has never seen it before. I wonder how she'll react?

Do your dogs love or hate snow, or don't they care either way?

When we had our bit of snow earlier this year Holly really loved it! She snuffled in it, jumped in it and took me for walks over it as if in a race! And this is a dog that hates rain!

I think he likes it, we had so little snow last year in CT that he didn't get too much of a chance. This will be his second winter, hopefully this year we will get more. He did come from Canada so he should love the snow :) Casey use to love the snow, but has slowed down where she just goes off the patio to do her business now.

Nikki, I love your pictures, they look like they really do enjoy it. That's the way our previous cairn was...snow balls all over her when she came in.

Mine love the snow. Even Benny gets in the spirit (and it's really hard to motivate him and his been there, done that attitude). They especially love to dig and chase snowflakes and the snow that flies up as they run. It's really cute.

We had our first snow about 6 weeks after I got Renny. He would have been about 12-14 weeks old then. It was only about 2" on the grass, and the sidewalks were just wet. When he first saw it he just looked at it for a minute or so like he was thinking "What's this stuff"? Then he stuck his nose in it and licked it, "Hmm tastes good". Then he ate some. Next he was rolling snowballs with his nose and tossing them in the air and trying to catch them "Hey this is fun!!". I wish I had taken pictures, it was really funny and cute.

Now that he's older (4 1/2 years), he still likes to romp and roll in the snow. When we take our walks, if it's not more than a few inches deep, he tends to walk in the snow rather than on the sidewalk. However, when it's time to take care of business, he wants a spot under a bush or other nearly bare spot.

If we have more than a few inches, I clear an area in the yard for his convenience and he seems to appreciate it, but if at all possible, he'd rather take our regular walk. I also clear snow on my half of the block. Between the area I clear and the alley, we have a reasonable "loop" for walking. My neighbors think I'm just a nice guy for plowing. Little do they know I do it for my dog!

The photo of the snow balls...he was really unhappy in that photo!!! he was very unhappy about coming inside the house! After he came in he just sat by the back door and whined and pawed at the door. LOL He would stay out there till he froze to death if it was up to him. He ate most of his snowballs lol

Cairns seem to love the snow, even out here where it gets pretty deep it is enjoyed by young and old alike. However, the dreaded "snow balls" seems to irritate the dickens out of my dogs!!! Makes for some fast and furious stripping of snow when they get back inside--a mess!

Sparky and Scout have no idea what snow is! They've never seen it! I'm hoping we get some this year.

Like others' our dogs seem to really enjoy 'extreme' weather of all types. If it's pouring rain they have to do little dashed outside - almost like running through the sprinkler. They do the same in snow.

I realize it's not "officially" winter in North America yet, but certainly the snow has arrived in some places; therefore I've opened a Winter album in the gallery.

It snowed a little last night here in Minnesota, and now big flakes are coming down. I really hope we get a measurable snow! It is so much fun to take the dogs out into the yard and watch them "snowplow" their trails through it. I toss them snowballs, and they get so confused when the snowballs break when they catch them! Wish I could get a picture the look on their faces.

Snow wears them out like little else, and I also enjoy the tired dogs who are willing to curl up on chairs or the couch and sleep in front of the fire for the rest of the evening.

We took our desert dogs up to the Arizona mountains last x-mas. Gypsy, who is older, didn't like being cold and had a challenge going to the bathroom in the white stuff! Taz, on the other hand, thought it was very cool and could have played outside all day.

Zach LOVES water in any form. He's the dog who will stand under the downspout when it's raining outside, tear through the snow, and gets a few minutes of uninterrupted play time with his water toys every time he gets a bath. Its actually difficult to get him to come in out of the snow sometimes.

My Miniature Pinscher, ZaZa, is the exact opposite. If there is any sort of precipitation, she will try her hardest to not go outside and will only abide if she's wearing one of her sweaters. If its raining we always have to watch her in the yard to make sure she actually leaves our little deck and goes to the bathroom.

This is Maxwell's first winter (he was born last December, but as an infant I'm guessing he didn't see too much of the outside world), and this morning was his first snow! He absolutely LOVED it. He had a ball. At first, when we went outside he was a little confused about where the grass went and what he should do with the snow. We went back out later to play, and he ran circles around the yard and rooted through the snow, dug around in it, ate it and then climbed up he A-frame and slid down the other side. He had so much fun playing on the A-frame, trying to get all the snow off; he went up one side and down the other over and over and over again.

Here are some photos:

Packy can't wait for snow, but you never know if or what we'll get here in Missouri. Kirby seemed to enjoy it last year, but he was pretty young. It will be fun to see his reaction. In the meantime, they're still up for fishing in the lake. Water temps are hovering around 54 degrees, so we have to pull them out when they start shivering too much.

We've got snow happening right now, here on the Chesapeake Bay.

Sweet Pea is asking for frequent "outs". And when she goes out she

stays out. Olie and Teddy...nada.

I dunno, maybe after living in an outdoor kennel for

four years before we adopted Sweet Pea has something to do with her

tolerance of the cold.

In ant instance, the snow is beautiful...

Everyone's pics and snow stories were so cute! We ended up not getting a single flake, nor a single drop of rain! No precip whatsoever. We're bummed. ;)
