Hello to all , My name is Daniel and my helper is a 4 year old Cairn "Ditsy" that I rescued 5 months ago. I was very surprised to find she was housebroken already. Im in the Army and work sometimes 20 hour days and she has never had an accident. I didnt pick her name was going to change it but it stuck . She loves going to my friends and playing with kids, Shes shy around other dogs and great with cats but not kittens thats another story. i have accidently kicked her stepped on her caught her tail in the door but she has never once barked we all joke that she is broken because she never makes a noise. She gets boosts of energy now and then and acts like a puppy. She likes to fetch . We just got back an hour ago from a 4 hour drive we went to visit friends in Roswell NM for the weekend she loves riding in the truck. I travel alot and she likes it too because her favorite treat is french fries. Shes is very spoiled.

Chase and Gus say welcome

You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it's a little thing, do something for others - something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.

It's because cats simply can't be trusted for heavy lifting & dirty work required in the war on terrior.

Such a cute face! Welcome!

(Oh, and I think I'm safe in saying that a great deal of cairn's are a little bit spoiled...who can resist those adorable faces! ;) )

Welcome Daniel and Ditsy! Aww I love the name Ditsy!! :D She's adorable and looks like a girl.

If you have to be deployed do you have someone who can take care of her? I live in a military town (We're a navy family) and this is an ongoing problem here. www.fosterdogs.com can help you if you find yourself in that situation.

Just thought I would throw that out there.

She looks so cute and name suits her! Welcome to the Forum. I acquired Holly at the age of 4 & 1/2 and she was was very very quiet at first. 16 mths on she now barks when required but not excessively!

Welcome to the group. First and foremost, thank you for your service to all of us--I appreciate what you do beyond measure! Second, you have a lovely little girl there. We started our love affair with Cairns in the same way as you, adopting a mature female from the local Humane Society many years ago and it has turned into a long lived love affairs with this breed.

I think you will find, as we did, that the dog's behavior will adjust to your environment over time. Cairns have a way of figuring out the environment and adjusting to it in positive ways, tho it sounds like your little girl is doing just fine.

Ditsy looks so much like our blessed "Tootsie" that gave our home so many years of love, smiles, and devotion--your picture and letter brings back so many good memories for me. Thanks for joining us and stay in touch.

Thanks to all for the warm welcomes. Heres the story on how i got Ditsy. My mom and grandma both have dog grooming shops so they get alot of dogs that people dont want or cant take care of. My grandma got ditsy 2 years ago from an old lady that passed and ditsy lived in kennel for the last two years . i started looking for a dog and my grandma told me about her and I went and saw her and fell in love lol . She jumped right in the truck and was ready to go . My grandma said she has always been very quiet the only problem she has had is she gets bored sometimes and rearanges the house she has never chewed anything but she does little things like she takes my shoes and puts them in bed and cuddles with them.

Austin.. my husband wasn't too keen on a little dog either, but really has fallen for Louie. We got him right before a six month deployment so my husband never got to know him well. Then when he got back I think he was jealous of Louie since we had bonded so much. But this weekend I have heard him talking to Louie saying "Come to Daddy" and "Stay by Daddy" which just melts my heart. He really does hate little dogs, but I think cairns aren't your typical little dog.

Good luck on your deployment. I hope you are not going anywhere dangerous. :( I'm glad your mom will keep Ditsy and I didn't meant to insinuate you would dump her, we just see it a lot here in Virginia Beach and surrounding areas. SPCA and shelters are always chock full because people get pets and when deployment comes around they either can't find anyone to keep the animal, or after they're gone the spouse can't handle the kids and dog. :( I see it on Craigslist all the time. You seem much attatched to Ditsey and that's wonderful!
