Autumn & Lola
We were at the park. This is only her 3rd outing with the new harness. All of a sudden, she pulled hard and her harness clip opened and she was out of it. She only got a few feet away and actually came back to my husband when he called her (a miracle in itself). He scooped her up and we examined the harness. She had busted the clip! The teeth were actually slightly bent. We couldn't believe it. (Further proof that Molly is part bull.) So, back in the car we went, on to the pet store, where we bought a new harness, this time with a buckle instead of a plastic clip. Anyone have this happen before? Do your harnesses have a metal buckle or a plastic clip? I swear she is the strongest little dog I've ever known! On a happier note, when we brought her back to the park, there was a small group of walkers. When they spotted us, the started walking in our direction saying, "Oh how cuteeeee!!!!!", etc. They circled around Molly, who preened and spun around and wiggled her butt, wagged her tail and licked every hand that was offered to her. It was funny. I later said to my husband, "What was that? The Cairn welcoming committee?"
Nikki
yes we had something similar happen to us with angel (she had a step in harness)except we were hiking in the woods and luckily angel came right to us. That when I switched to the web master harness. There aint no way she can get out of that one! here's a photo of it. (I think Jessica H's scooter has one also) Dogs' lives are too short. jodi0553
Yup, Currey had a collar with a clip and it was for dogs up to 35 lbs. One look at a squirrel and boom, he was GONE! We now only use a metal buckle collar. Also, he had the smaller flexi-lead rated up to 25 lbs, I think, and that got frayed, too, after only about a year. For the past 2+ years we've had the same flexi - rated up to either 40 or 45 lbs. These guys have necks like tanks, so be careful of any leash, harness, collar, etc, that is for "small" dogs. Autumn & Lola
Nikki - that is a cool looking harness. Maybe we'll have to upgrade! Jodi - yes, our flexi-lead is also for medium sized dogs (I think up to 45lbs as well), and even that looks a bit fragile to me. The harnesses we saw were sized as to girth, not weight, so I guess that is where we made our mistake with that.
kjwarnold
Ditto on the small Flexi. They may be under the Small weight limit but their strength exceeds it. Jandy and my Cairns, Kirby & Phinney
Nikki
I never had a flexi break but I do take my dogs over to my mom and dads house like every couples weeks and they dont have a fenced yard. So I have tie outs for them it had a weight limit of 80lbs. I thought it would hold scotty! boy I was wrong! the moment he saw a bird he ran full force at them. pulled the tie out of the ground and broke it and his flat collar broke completely off. Then he turned and looks at me like holy crap Im free and took off running. I took like 20mins to get him back. What a lil stinker! So no ties in the ground any more. now its in the tree! I dont think he can pull down a big tree. Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really." - Carlotta Monterey O'Neill
Hawkeye
I have never had a harness break on us and it has the plastic clasp. I did just by the Premier Easy Walker for Bailey, which also has plastic clasps. I hope it holds up...This harness really does help on having him walk nice. Malcolm's Dad
These dogs are incredibly strong. When Malcolm sees a squirrel he takes off and pulls on that leash with surprising force. He has a 6ft training leash, I thought of getting a flexi-lead but figured it wouldn't hold up. I'm glad to hear the 40-45 lb didn't break, yet lol. OzGirl
I glad Molly came right back They sometimes do surprise us... We never had a harness break, but the small dog flexi lead I bought when Roxy was a puppy just doesn't get used cos I don't trust it (another dumb buy )
Maggie15
I would never trust the harness that relies on the plastic snap... there's another one out there (that i've used for years) and its cheap, it has the plastic snap, but it has two chrome rings that you connect the leash through that are on each side of the snap, so that will always keep the harness together even if the plastic clip lets go... hope that makes sense, i can post a pic if needed... for fun i tried pulling on some of those plastic clips to see how easy they came apart, and many are different strength (in the same brand and size - so its quality control) and came apart very easily... ak
Nena
Never had any trouble with collars or harness. I get the medium size for Nena she is 13 pounds. I have several harness and they all have plastic clips, some have the metal to clip the leash in, but I have never had one break. and she is puller. I stay away from the little, thin harness and collars. cairn terriers leave pawprints on our lives
Sandi16
I had to comment on this because today we were out walking and Louie almost knocked me over. I too got Louie the medium flexi-leash, a 23 ft one. It has made walks so much better for us both. I get exercise and he has 23 feet to sniff until he feels the tug and he comes running. Today, he didn't come running. What I didn't know is that he had actually planted himself down low in preperation for the tug because he REALLY wanted to smell the that spot some more. There I was, just walking along, get to the end of the lead, my arm jerks back and I nearly topple over backwards. My arm is sore right now. I'm a bigger woman, over 200lbs and was almost bested by my "little dog".
josie&holly
I don't use a flexi lead because on the odd occasion I have done - Holly decides she is staying put, I carry on walking and then nearly get my arm pulled out..............or one one occasion she managed to wrap herself round a bush and it took me ages to ttry and untangle her, keep hold of lead, and stop her from pulling some more!!! I have a training lead that I can have longer or use as a short one and that is the best one when I take her for walks in countryside - she can then have a snuffle or sniff but still be in my range. I use a harness that has two metal rings that you fasten the lead through and so far that has been OK. www.cairnterriertalk.co.uk
Autumn & Lola
A & J - I don't think I've seen that kind before. I will look next time we are at the pet supply store. Sandi - I'll tell ya, these lil' pumpkins are strong. My husband has mastered the flexi-lead but I rarely do it myself. I was in a bad accident a while back with many broken bones (including 4 ribs). Recovery has been slow with many setbacks, so I cannot take the chance that she'll pull me clear apart! With Daddy she can roughouse all she likes, but with Mommy she knows she has to be gentle. Tracy A.
A & J - I don't think I've seen that kind before. I will look next time we are at the pet supply store. they call it is 'step through' harness.... this is different than the 'figure 8 harness' that most people have.
