BeeBladen
Hello everyone! I finally got some pictures from the breeder of my little Gretsch! We go in two weeks to pick him out of the two males in the litter. I thought I would share the photos I have so far to keep everyone up to date on the little one, and see if any of you have advice for deciding which pup I should bring home at 8 weeks. (any tips or secrets I should know??) I already have a crate with divider and numerous chew toys and extra towels, spray, etc. Haha! I know nothing can prepare me for my terrorist, but who is?? Any advice on choosing, let me know! We want a laid back, but playful pup. They were born 7/8/
carolinaila09
congrats on getting a new puppy soon! i just got mine almost 2 weeks ago. be prepared for lots of fun and some tough times! its all becoming worth it. she has learned things so quickly!! i got her early because her litter was pretty large and the mother was not really doing anything to help them out at all. be prepared for accidents for sure...nature's miracle is amazing stuff! i also have a biting issue going on with paisley, but im praying its just this puppy stage since many people have the same problem. my hands look like i own a cat rather than a dog!! haha i thought i had enough stuff, but i have been to petsmart probably more times in the past week than i have ever! she kept tipping over her food bowl and it would scare her to death, so i had to go out and get new ones. as well as extra toys, and of course food, collar/leash/tag, and vet visits! make sure your vet checks out your puppy as soon as they can after you get him. most breeders will let you bring the puppy back if there is a serious condition, i know mine would, but luckily she was healthy! as far as picking out the pup, ive always heard that you should not get the shy one, but not the really outgoing one either. paisley was not really outgoing, and she was smaller than 2 of her 3 sisters, but she warmed up to me pretty soon after i visited and held her a couple times. the last time i visited before picking her up, i decided to stick with her because her little tail just constantly was wagging! her biggest sister was an aggressive puppy and was fat. the other larger one was already sold so she wasnt even an option. the other smaller one was just kind of blah and had no personality at all! paisley's personality has definitely come out after being home for the past 2 weeks. she is so fun. id definitely suggest the middle of the road puppy as far as personality, but any dog can be trained to be your best friend, i believe. with patience and lots of love, youll get through it all! have so much fun getting ready for him to come home! its sooo fun **Ila and Paisley**
BeeBladen
Here are some new pictures the breeder sent! They are starting to look very different and bigger! The one looks like he may be brindle and the other maybe wheaten?? Color doesn't matter, we go next week to see their personalities. I think it's a little early (4 and a half weeks) maybe I can wait a little longer. Any suggestions? The breeder also usually has pups go to new homes about 8 or 9 weeks. Some people on this site think its a little early. Should I be wary? Heres the pics!
SparkyJonesMom
Oh, they are adorable! From what I can gather, 12 weeks seems to be the best time to let the pups go to their new home. It gives them more time to learn things from their mom and siblings. But I know plenty of pups on this forum went home before then, and they turned out just fine. toomanypaws
How precious! I really like the looks of the male on the right. As far as age, 8 wks is the recognized age to bring a pup home. Anything before 8 wks is what you need to be concerned about. Plan to crate train. It's the best potty training method. I look forward to more pics. <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/maiwag/terriersiggy.jpg" border="0" class="linked-sig-image" /> Beth, mom to Ninja (5), Hannah (7), Abbey (7 1/2), Kiara (10)
kittdog
I don't think you can tell a puppy's personality until closer to 6-8 weeks, and even then some things don't come out till later. We did a temperament test on our pups at 7 weeks, which isn't the only thing to judge personality but it's a start. Conformation usually they say at 8 weeks is a good time to see since that's how they'll look as an adult, but that varies. If your main goal is a laid back pup I would wait until they're a bit older before deciding. 8-9 weeks is fine, but I think 12 weeks is better so they learn more from their mothers and siblings.
