Arelyn530
Hello all! I've been stalking this forum off and on for the past several months since my husband and I first set out to find a dog. Once we had settled on Cairn Terriers, we managed to connect with a friend of a friend that was expecting pups. Wetherton was born not long after on May 11th and we went to pick him up over the Fourth of July weekend. Amazingly, he slept for the entire 3 1/2 hour trip home. We stopped by my parents house and my in-laws house on the way back and he didn't hesitate to greet everyone. (Including my in-law's elderly Yorkshire/Silky Terrier, who was mortally offended that we had brought a puppy into HIS house). He hasn't whined at night since the first day and he has so much spunk! He is simultaneously a terror and an angel. Whenever we go anywhere in the house, Wetherton walks right behind us. If we step away to another part of the house, though, who knows what he might get into. So far his favorite things are shoes, shoelaces, drawstrings of any sort, carpet, fingers and most of all, TOES! Obviously he's not supposed to have these things. He's been playing well with his rope toy that has a nubby part, a stuffed fox and a fuzzy tennis ball, but usually only if we are actively playing with him. He's definitely teething and isn't really grasping what he can chew on and what he can't. As far as potty training goes, we've managed to catch the signals everytime he needs to go out for a poop...but not so lucky with the wetter accidents. We had a scary but hilarious moment last night. My husband was getting a bowl of yogurt from the fridge and Wetherton was underfoot in the kitchen. Suddenly, my husband asked me where the puppy was. I had seen him snuffling near the fridge and said he must have been over there. After looking around the kitchen for a moment we heard some scuffling sounds from the fridge. Wetherton had gone into the gap between the wall and the fridge and around to the back. We pulled the fridge forward, but the puppy was nowhere in sight. More scuffling and whimpering...from under the fridge. He had climbed under the bottom of the fridge via a large open area in the back and was too scared to come out. He crawled and squirmed all the way to the front where the vent and visible light were, but when we removed the faceplate there wasn't a hole large enough for him to come through. Since the fridge was heavy and full of food, lifting or tilting it weren't really options. My husband wound up reaching in and pulling him out the way he went in, while i helped prod from the front. Apart from dust bunnies and grease, he was perfectly fine, if a little subdued. I wish I had thought to get the camera. The fridge has now been scooted over all the way to one side and boxes fill the back of the large gap so he can't get behind the fridge. I can tell that we will gain many, many stories as we raise this clever little devil. -Arelyn
jimnconnie
CAIRNGRATULATIONS!!!!!! on your new boy. He's a fine looking young fellow, and sure to bring you lots of fun (and a little frustration!) in the days ahead. What's the story behind his unusual name? With his attraction to refrigerators, maybe he should be nicknamed "Cool Hand Luke" Welcome to the Forum, you'll love it here! Arelyn530
What's the story behind his unusual name? With his attraction to refrigerators, maybe he should be nicknamed "Cool Hand Luke" here! Jim It's a name my husband has been known to use for in-game pets whenever we are gaming online. It's just become such a common name with us that it fit very well. I much prefer it over the standard dog names like Fido or Rex, and neither one of us felt like giving him a "people" name. Paisley and Wetherton do look so much alike! Perhaps they have a common ancestor somewhere.

tlwtheq
Welcome and congratulations on adopting such a beautiful Cairn child! Naming your boy "Wetherton" reminds me of what I chose for my first Cairn in 1983, "Holdsworth". My partner at the time and I were full time musicians, and my partner's favorite guitar player was (probably still is) Alan Holdsworth, hence the name. We, of course, developed a series of nicknames over the years. The first one was "Doodle Dog", for obvious reasons. It'll be interesting to hear what nicknames you pick for Wetherton. Thanks for the pics and stories. Tara, Alpha B of the Wilk pack Max and Nelly

Arelyn530
Does he get a 10gal. hat I suppose if he did it would have to be a 10 oz. hat. If I tried to put my dad's hat on him it would cover/trap him just as surely as a cardboard box.

TazTalk
What a cutie-pie. They are very curious creatures for sure and will add so much laughter to your life! We have filled the entire area under our bed with storage boxes and shoe boxes so that Taz can't go under there, hide and be impossible to retrieve. As mischevious as they are, they force us to become quite creative!!

Idaho Cairns
Beautiful little dog. You nailed it, Cairns are "clever" indeed. The biting will pass as will the inside marking but the little surprises in behavior will always continue.
